Fantasy Football Schadenfreude

Without making this particular article a version of dictionary corner, this is the state definition of schadenfreude: Satisfaction or pleasure felt at another’s hardship, based by the German Schaden (harm) and freude (joy). Nowhere is the emotion more clear than in Fantasy Football!

There’s nothing more pleasing than watching a game that traditionally you’d never value, together with players not even in your team, just from the hope that the hapless shield your friend comes in his line up could enable in twelve or even score a personal objective. Perhaps his striker is only going to play pointless moments at the end of the match, and perhaps even hit the jack pot with a first half card it’s really a minus points bonanza!

Ofcourse the flipside with the also holds true baanpolball  from Fantasy Football – uncontrolled jealousy at your buddy’s uncanny ability to modify his Captain to the no-hope player who unexpectedly strikes a hatrick or his choice to play with five star defenders every one whom maintain sterile sheets. Suddenly the point-scoring requires a backseat to feelings of grief and revenge – in true British sporting heritage. It’s not the losing I hate, it is the other chap winning which basically gets on my goat!

Of course as the summer season progresses along with your team gradually slides down the league table, the strong emotions which plagued every waking minute offer way to apathy, depression and also a gloomy sense of inevitability. The team starts to have a back seat, Friday nights and Saturday mornings are not spent poring on the latest statistics, but as an alternative seeing friends or perhaps even accepting your spouse breakfast in bed. Simply speaking, life just doesn’t seem to be worth living.

Finally the one thing that prevents you from going on the end of a chain is your expectation that maybe your Nemesis who has won the last five titles could slide up, create a mistake, forget their Captain has already been suspended. You become obsessed not with the packs of one’s own team (every single member which you now despise and blame for all the pain from the world) but alternatively you descend in to a nightmarish, voyeuristic Fantasy Football Schadenfreude world.

Until next season ofcourse! Next season it will most likely be different. I will be Fantasy Football Champion!
